The architecture of the 70s and 80s had a distinct look of concrete walls and protruding blocks. The new forms at Iowa State University were four towers of buildings looking a lot like this hospital. They were dormitories with such a modern look. Ironically one of the Towers had to be torn down fifteen years ago because of structural failure.
The boxes are distinct design features on the hospital which are really functional. The one box was actually a closet for two adjoining rooms. The wall hits between each box and a hospital room would have a projecting closet. One on each end of that window wall. In this case form did follow function.
