Violet Power.....

I could get really suckered into buying every violet that I see but I am behaving myself.  I saw a pure red one at a Kmart last week and I held back.  The prices are so cheap anymore. Are they coming from China? I hope not. I can remember when you had to invest 6 or 7 bucks into them and now 3 to 4 dollars is the going rate.
I planted seeds indoors today and also tried my hand at slipping violet leaves to start new plants.  I definitely am getting into this spring thing. This violet is really growing well in my dining room window.  I had to move them back a little as they were in direct sun.

What a pretty picture Larry! You have made me want violets again despite having 3 cats! My mother loved violets and she and my nephew started many babies!!! I bet the red was very striking.

Larry, you've caught the a.v. bug? That's wonderful!!! I was going to make a post today on propagating from leaf cuttings, perhaps tomorrow. They grow very easily from leaf cuttings. Sometimes you will get up to 8 plants from one leaf. (and you can reuse the same leaf up to half a dozen times to get even more babies from it)... hope you have lots of friends. You can find growers online that ship leaves, and they are much more beautiful than the grocery store varieties. My favourites are the minis, (they come as small as one inch sized pots) and the trailers which are stunning, as they cascade their multiple crowns, in hanging baskets. If you like I can send you some leaves come warmer weather. :)

Yes, I would take leaves. Let me see how I do with these right now and I will send you an address. That would be so generous of you.

I learn something every day. I didn't know you grew violets that way.

Oh, they have such lovely colours - but I can't get mine to flower at all now. It has lovely healthy leaves but no flowers. What am I doing wrong?

I was told by various persons to let them dry out so as to encourage them to bloom. Not so dry that they totally wilt but dry enough that a good drink makes them feel like a spring rain. Ha! Through neglect they can get dry and when you get them hydrated up to par again, they will set on blooms. I have had old fashion ones in my young past that would bloom continually once they got started but I never watered them much and they sat above the kitchen sink.

Great Specimen

The variegated red twig is doing well this  year. The rains of little amount still did revive it from its winter slumber.  The bush was pl...
