My poinsettia has done well out under the shade tree. It is in the plastic planter shaped like a swan and I think the plastic has been good to keep it from drying out. For some reason I have one reddish leaf that has formed on the under side of all of the foilage.

I like that one red leaf. It's got a beautiful mottled color.
Dying leaves take on such a pretty colour. I think you're right about the plastic keeping the moisture in.
