Murray, Iowa.......

When I was young, the bottom floor of this building was a furniture store and the American Legion met upstairs. I have a dresser and a desk at my mom's house that was bought here in 1959. It is all fake wood but was built strong and is still in good shape. The furniture store was owned by the funeral home owners. As you can see now that the Legion has moved downstairs and check out the little sign on the door on the left of the building by clicking on the picture.
The paint job is new as I don't ever remembering it looking like this before and it certainly cheers it up.

Strangely enough it looks a lot neater and more picturesque in the small view rather than the enlarged view. So what is "red hat"?

Some of our small rural towns have these old buildings where their purposes have shifted from stores to offices back to stores and into restaurants. All of them have character. And, oh...if the walls could only talk! I am happy they don't tear them all down.

Interesting building. I guess that's the US equivalent of our British Legion. I had a look at the red hat!

Jenny Joseph wrote a poem "Warning." It addressed the idea that when she got a certain age that shw would start wearing purple and probably a red fancy hat and spit on the street.
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
Because of the poem, women in America who were 50 and older started groups where they dressed up and wore flamboyant red hats. They would all go to tea or eat out together. One time a few years ago, we were downtown viewing an outdoor art show, and on one side of the street were 15 older women who had all bought ice cream cones, and were scatter up and down the front of a building in purple and wearing red hats. Gosh I wish I had brought a camera.
Look up the poem and you can see that it is a poem that encourages women to step out and be whatever and do whatever they want in spite of societies demands.
I will tell you more about Murray. It is an old town for Iowa.

I love those "Red Hat" Ladies and their red hats. I posted that poem on My Photo Blog a few months ago. I love that poem also.

I love that poem. We have several legion halls in our area.
